RONALD J. FREITAS, Chief Deputy District Attorney
Ron Freitas is the Chief Deputy District Attorney of the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office Homicide and Gang Vertical Prosecution Divisions.
Mr. Freitas is co-chairman of California District Attorney’s Association Gang Prosecution Committee, and technical advisor for C.D.A.A.’s Gang Symposium. In 2010, Mr. Freitas wrote a chapter on Criminal Street Gangs for the Continuing Education of the Bar’s book on Criminal Sentencing Enhancements. He has taught locally, across the state and nationally on the subject of Criminal Street Gangs.
A career prosecutor, Mr. Freitas was the first San Joaquin County prosecutor to have D.N.A. admitted in a murder trial. He was also the first San Joaquin County prosecutor to conduct a dual-jury trial (which he accomplished twice), the first to obtain a conviction on the gang special circumstance, and the first to have a defendant sentenced to the death penalty for a murder involving a gang special circumstance. He is the founder of the San Joaquin County Homicide Review Committee and the co-founder of the San Joaquin County Gang Task Force.
In addition to the Homicide and Gang Division, Mr. Freitas also supervises the District Attorney’s Office Protocol Investigation - Legal Division, and Parole Eligibility Hearings.
