San Joaquin County Green is a program developed by direction of the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors. San Joaquin County's Purchasing and Support Services, placed in the lead role, created a committee comprised of representatives of multiple County departments, area chambers of commerce, local colleges and community based organizations.
San Joaquin "County Green" Program Goals:
~ conserve natural resources
~ preserve air, soil, and water quality
~ eliminate or reduce toxins that create hazards to workers and the community
~ reduce landfill disposal
~ increase the use of environmentally preferable products
~ encourage all agencies of County government to revise their purchasing practices to reduce their negative impact on
human health and the environment "whenever practicable"
Environmentally preferable procurement considers: toxicity, durability, recyclability, conservation of resources, price, performance, availability
The County Administrative Environmental Purchasing Policy (Green Policy) reflects a long-term commitment to the purchase of environmentally preferable products. In 2008 the County adopted this policy in response to internal, political and public expectations for a basic framework for defining and achieving environmental purchasing goals.
The Environmental Purchasing Program is centralized in the Purchasing and Support Services Department and works with established, successful programs already in place throughout the County (i.e. Public Works, Information Systems, etc.). We work together to promote environmental considerations in the purchasing decisions of all County agencies.
