The Office of the Sheriff for San Joaquin County has existed since 1849. The Sheriff holds an elective office, which is subject to the vote of the citizens of the county. The Sheriff is elected to a four-year term and he or she may serve additional terms if re-elected by the citizens. The newly elected Sheriff is Steve Moore. Sheriff Moore is preceded by 23 previous Sheriffs. History
